Grow-Along Week 10

Howdy folks!

So, it has been a rainy week here which means lots of things are sprouting up and putting all kinds of energy into plumping up and producing. I've been enjoying a little guilty pleasure in the rain since not much can be done outdoors and I've been spending a good bit of time with some good books (seriously good books... hit me up if you want the titles). I did manage to snap some good pics yesterday between rainstorms, so this post might be a little light on pics compared to the last few since rain and cameras don't mix well. ;)

In the back garden, things are greening up beautifully! The pea trellises have gone up on the 2 varieties that need extra support, and the lettuce should be ready for our first salads relatively soon. The Honeycrisp apple tree we planted has opened its buds rather quickly and the plums should be popping out some leaves in the near future. The onions are looking quite robust and both varieties are showing vigorous growth. I'm not too sure the ones I started from seed are going to have a long enough growing season, but it was an experimental planting so we shall see what happens.

Leaves on the Honeycrisp!
The tomatoes and peppers haven't hit the raised beds yet. The bed the tomatoes are destined for is a bit more eroded than I had initially assessed and we're going to need a few loads of compost to replenish it before we can plant. The pepper bed, though seems to have a volunteer kale sprouting. I'll likely be relocating it to the salad bed and we'll see how it does.

Volunteer Kale?
The fruit plants are making a good showing as well. The strawberries have their first green beginnings of fruits and are starting to put out runners (that I've been trimming off until they establish themselves better). The currants are all flush with leaves and looking rather healthy after a slow start. The Pink Champagne Currant plant is meeting our expectations and has buds forming that will become fruit later this year. The blueberries are looking a bit bedraggled after the super cold winter, but are still putting out some berries this year despite having taken a bit of a battering through the winter.

Jamie seems to be having much the same weather in Georgia lately:

The garden areas prior to the Rain of Doom. Aside from everything growing taller and me getting the eggplants and tomatoes in the ground, we haven't had much change in the existing gardens. I finally got the watermelon patch tilled and sown, so I'm pretty excited to see how that turns out. We're also hoping to get the chicken coop and run completed in the next week or so and get our girls moved outside.

Elaine is also back with us this week and has a lot going on in her square-foot gardens:

New in the garden are lettuces, tomatoes, peppers, marigolds, and mint galore

 Until next week, Happy Gardening!
